The problem lies with mining for metals which itself takes up 85% to 95% of a device’s total CO2 emissions for two years. That means the energy required to make a new phone is the same as the energy needed to charge & operate the phone for an entire decade.

The production process is the main source of this footprint. It uses materials from mined ores to make the components. A 160-gram phone needs 30kg of earth and produces 85kg of waste. This is 99.8% waste before using the phone.

The current design makes it hard to take apart the phone, because of proprietary screws and batteries stuck with glue. Phones are often shredded and sent for smelting when “recycled.” Due to the small amounts of a variety of materials in these devices, smelting is practically ineffective at recovering most materials.

ICT represented 1% of the world’s carbon footprint in 2007 which by 2040 will exceed 14% claiming a portion that’s half as large as the carbon impact of the entire transport industry.
