iPhone Model Numbers Explained: How to Tell Where Your Phone Is From

Short answer: Check Settings → General → About → Model Number. Indian units end in HN/A. American units end in LL/A — and from the iPhone 14 onwards, US models have no physical SIM tray at all. That single fact catches out more Indian buyers than anything else in this category.

How to read the model number

Open Settings → General → About and tap Model Number once. It switches between two formats.

The first shows something like MQ8V3HN/A. The letters before the slash are the region code. The second, starting with A followed by four digits, identifies the hardware variant and tells you which cellular bands the device supports.

Suffix Region What to know
HN/A India Physical SIM + eSIM. Sold and supported here.
LL/A United States iPhone 14 onward: eSIM only, no SIM tray
ZD/A, ZP/A UAE, Middle East / Asia-Pacific Usually dual SIM capable
J/A Japan Camera shutter sound cannot be silenced
CH/A China mainland Two physical SIM slots, no eSIM

The US eSIM-only problem

From the iPhone 14 generation onward, Apple removed the SIM tray entirely from American models. There is no slot. Nothing to open.

That matters because grey-market US units circulate widely in Indian markets, often at attractive prices. The phone is genuine. It is just built for a market where every operator supports eSIM smoothly.

In India it can still work — all three major operators offer eSIM — but you are committed to eSIM for every line, forever. No borrowing a friend's SIM, no dropping in a physical prepaid card while travelling, and a more involved process every time you change phones. If eSIM suits you, fine. If you did not know before buying, it is an unpleasant surprise.

The Japanese shutter sound

Japanese-market iPhones play a camera shutter sound that cannot be disabled — not by silent mode, not by turning the volume down. It is enforced in firmware to comply with local regulation.

Harmless in a park. Awkward in a meeting, a library, or anywhere you would rather photograph a document discreetly. Worth knowing before you buy a J/A unit.

Does the region affect warranty in India?

This is the practical question, and the honest answer is: it depends, and you should assume the worst.

Apple's warranty terms and service availability vary by region, and a device purchased abroad may not be serviceable under warranty in India in the same way an Indian unit is. Some repairs may be handled, others declined or delayed while parts are sourced.

For a device already outside its original manufacturer warranty — which any renewed phone is — the more important question is who provides your warranty. A seller's own warranty is honoured by the seller regardless of where the device was originally sold, which is precisely why the length and the identity of the guarantor matter more than the region code. See warranty and billing explained.

Do cellular bands matter?

Less than forum arguments suggest, but not zero.

Modern iPhones support wide band ranges and generally work well on Indian networks regardless of region. Where it can matter is 5G, since band support varies by hardware variant and a phone built for another market may not cover every band your operator uses here.

If 5G matters to you, an Indian HN/A unit removes the question entirely. See which renewed iPhones support 5G in India.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if my iPhone is an Indian model?

Go to Settings, General, About and tap Model Number. Indian units end in HN/A. Tapping again shows the A-series hardware identifier.

What does LL/A mean on an iPhone?

It indicates a United States model. From the iPhone 14 generation onward, US models have no physical SIM tray and support eSIM only.

Can I use a US iPhone in India?

Yes, but from the iPhone 14 onward it will be eSIM only, since there is no SIM tray. All three major Indian operators support eSIM, though you cannot use a physical SIM at all.

Why does my iPhone camera make a sound I can't turn off?

It is a Japanese-market unit. The shutter sound is enforced in firmware to meet local regulation and cannot be disabled, even on silent.

Does an imported iPhone have warranty in India?

Manufacturer warranty terms and service availability vary by region, so an imported device may not be serviced here on the same terms. For a renewed device, what matters is the seller's own warranty and who honours it.
