Short answer: Grades describe cosmetic condition only, and every seller sets their own. Grade A generally means near-flawless, Grade B means light visible wear, Grade C means obvious scratches or dents. None of them tells you anything about the battery, the internals, or how long the phone will last — which is the information you actually need.
What the grades usually mean

Note what stays constant down the right-hand column. The grade tells you how the phone looks. It says nothing about how the phone works.
The problem: nobody agrees on the scale
There is no Indian standard for smartphone grading. No certifying body, no audit, no shared definition.
One seller's Grade A is another's Grade B. Some run A to D, some run A+ to C, some invent their own words entirely — Excellent, Superb, Mint, Pristine. A grade is a marketing claim made by the person who wants your money, assessed by that same person, against criteria they wrote.
It can still be useful. It is just not verification.
“Like New” is the most abused phrase in the category
Because it describes appearance while sounding like it describes condition.
A phone can be genuinely flawless on the outside and still have a battery at 81%, an aftermarket screen, and eighteen months of hard use behind it. It photographs beautifully. It is accurately described as like new. And it will disappoint you by month four.
Cosmetic grading is the easiest thing in this industry to do well and the least useful thing to do well.
What to ask instead of “what grade is it?”
Four questions, none of them about appearance.
- What is the battery health percentage, and is the battery replaced as standard? A number, not a range. “Above 80%” is a range designed to cover a battery at 81%.
- Which components were replaced on this specific unit? A real process produces a per-device record.
- How many quality checks, and covering what? A specific figure and a list. Vagueness means no documented process.
- What is the warranty and who honours it? The seller's own estimate of failure risk, stated in months.
Answers to those four predict your next two years. The grade predicts your first afternoon.
Does cosmetic condition matter at all?
Some, and it is fair to care about it — you are going to hold this thing for hours a day.
But be honest about the economics. Most people put a case and a screen protector on a new phone within a week, which means light frame wear disappears permanently on day one. Paying a premium for a flawless frame you are about to hide is a real choice, just not always a rational one.
Two exceptions where condition genuinely matters: a cracked or dented frame can compromise water resistance and structural integrity, and deep screen scratches are visible through any protector. Those are function problems wearing cosmetic clothing.
